There are several illnesses that may produce the same signs and symptoms of COVID-19. COVID-19 symptoms include: Fever 100° F or greater, muscle or body aches, chills, headache, sore throat, new cough, congested or runny nose, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, new loss of taste or smell, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and fatigue. Schools are required to follow the New York Department of Health (NYSDOH) guidelines for returning to school when showing COVID-19 symptoms. What to do when your child displays signs and symptoms of COVID-19: NYSDOH recommends a child be evaluated by their health care provider when showing any signs of COVID-19. The health care provider will determine what actions should be taken next. They will either request a COVID-19 test be given or give the child an alternate diagnosis (if COVID-19 is not suspected). If there is a POSITIVE RESULT your local health department will contact you to follow up and go over the quarantine guidelines. If there is a NEGATIVE RESULT and your child's symptoms have improved over the last 24 hours they may return to school with a doctor's note or a copy of the negative test result. If you do not bring your child to a health care provider your child must remain in isolation at home and is not able to go back to school until: * At least 10 days have passed since date of the first symptom(s) and symptoms are improving. * Childs is fever-free for a least 72 hours without the use of fever reducing medicines. Schoharie County Department of Health is a great resource for any COVID-19 questions or concerns 518-295-8365. If you have questions regarding these guidelines please contact me at 607-588-7541 or acox@gccs.us. Thank you, Alissa Cox, RN
